Leave the city centre to the south and be delighted by the place names. You’re in the heart of Burgundy now alongside Gevrey-Chambertin, Aloxe Corton, Vosne-Romanée, Beaune, Pommard, Meursault: picturesque towns and villages which will give you a warm welcome to contrast with their cool, centuries-old cellars. If you head towards the north of the Côte d’Or other big names await: Epoisses and the Marquise de Sévigné; Bussy-le-Grand, its chateau and the master of the house Roger de Rabutin, Comte de Bussy; Montbard and Georges-Louis Leclerc, the naturalist Comte de Buffon, father of the Paris Jardin des Plantes; the Abbey of Fontenay, that Cistercian masterpiece founded by Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, and more. The Côte d’Or is truly a region where it’s impossible to be bored…
